Long tailed workloads and the return of hierarchical storage management

— Hierarchical storage management (HSM) also called tiered storage management is back but in a different form. HSM exploits the access pattern skew across data sets by placing cold, seldom accessed data on slow cheap media and frequently accessed data on fast near media.  In old days, HSM typically referred to syst...

To BIN or not to BIN, that is the question

— Hamlet was depressed when he posed the question, “to be to not to be”. There was no questions in Barry Burk’s mind when StorageNerve asked Michael Hay “ Where is the Hitachi BINfile” and Michael answered “Hitachi doesn’t have the concept of a ‘BINfile’.” Barry’s immediate response was that “EV...

So Long Boston, Hello Sydney

— Boston is funny. When we first got here in 2002 the immediate reaction was 'crap, we just made a huge mistake'. It was cold, you had little old ladies driving Buicks and flipping you off with road rage, driving anywhere was insane, and the environs were 'crusty' in comparison to the old home Seattle, and the only view ...

About

My name is Catherine Liao and you're reading the latest postings of various blogs I follow. You'll notice that the topics tend to center around Cloud Computing, Data Center, Virtualization, Servers, Web Technologies and 24x7 Operations.

These are topics that I'm interested in as I've spent a large chunk of my professional career building, deploying, and maintaining 24x7 application delivery environments. I use the knowledge I've garnered daily in my role as a Technology Solutions Architect for Cisco. I should note that this site is my personal site and does not reflect the views of Cisco.

Feel free to drop me a note if you find this site useful or if you'd like for me to check out your blog. I can be reached at catherine.liao@gmail.com. You can also connect with me via LinkedIn or Twitter.
