Verizon Builds Hybrid Cloud with VMware vCloud Datacenter

— Verizon, which is really into this cloud business – against the day when phones as we know them evaporate into the ether – and so means to have clouds for everybody eventually, has added to its very high-end, mission-critical, totally handheld public cloud of last year. It’s taken VMware’s Datacenter widgetry ...

Physical Education in a Virtual World

— I will admit that "Cloud Computing" terminology is becoming confused. People are mixing together the concepts of commodity hardware datacenters, the benefits of virtualization and massively parallel systems into a blender and calling it a "cloud." The truth is that these three concepts are very...

Holistic Approach to Energy Efficient Datacenters

— By Dileep Bhandarkar, Ph. D. Distinguished EngineerGlobal Foundation Services, Microsoft  A little over three years ago, I joined Microsoft to lead the hardware engineering team that helped decide which servers Microsoft would purchase to run its online services. We had just brought our first Microsoft-designed d...

Energy Proportional Datacenter Networks

— A couple of weeks back Greg Linden sent me an interesting paper called Energy Proportional Datacenter Networks. The principal of energy proportionality was first coined by Luiz Barroso and Urs Hölzle in an excellent paper titled The Case for Energy-Proportional Computing. The core principal behind energy proportional...

It was an excellent talk and is posted at Urs Holzle at Velocity 2010.  Jonatha...

60,000 servers at Facebook

— Last week, I estimated that Facebook now had 50,000 servers in Facebook Software Use. Rich Miller of Datacenter Knowledge actually managed to sleuth out the accurate server count in: Facebook Server Count: 60,000 or more.   He took Tom Cook’s Velocity 2010 talk from last week that showed growth with...

Rightsizing Servers to Achieve Cost and Power Savings in the Datacenter

—   By Dileep Bhandarkar, Ph. D. Distinguished Engineer Global Foundation Services, Microsoft     I speak about server rightsizing from time to time at technology conferences, and am surprised that the basic concepts are new to some people in the industry. A lot of people don’t realize the huge performan...

DatacenterJunkie coming to your city!

— That's right, it's almost conference season again, and I'm gearing up for quite a bit of activity. Macworld Expo Recap

— After a long week of Macworld, I've come to the (non)startling re-realization: Apple is still irrelevant in the datacenter world, but it spawns some fabulous after-parties. Speaking of which ...

Thinking about the Systems Modeling Language and the Datacenter

— For a while, developmental and operational environments have rarely worked well together. Developers design something and then throw it over the wall for the infrastructure team to design an environment to support it. Then it’s thrown over the wall for operational teams to deploy and monitor it for the rest of it...

About

My name is Catherine Liao and you're reading the latest postings of various blogs I follow. You'll notice that the topics tend to center around Cloud Computing, Data Center, Virtualization, Servers, Web Technologies and 24x7 Operations.

These are topics that I'm interested in as I've spent a large chunk of my professional career building, deploying, and maintaining 24x7 application delivery environments. I use the knowledge I've garnered daily in my role as a Technology Solutions Architect for Cisco. I should note that this site is my personal site and does not reflect the views of Cisco.

Feel free to drop me a note if you find this site useful or if you'd like for me to check out your blog. I can be reached at catherine.liao@gmail.com. You can also connect with me via LinkedIn or Twitter.
